Scania is one of the few commercial vehicle manufacturers in the world that can independently design and produce hydraulic retarders that match Scania transmissions. Recently, these Swedish engineers released their new hydraulic retarder, which makes driving safer and easier for the driver and makes the vehicle operation more economical.
The new retarder model number R4100D can be automatically released to idle mode when the retarder is not braked. Since the stator impeller and the rotor impeller, which provide the braking force by the retarder, are disengaged when rotating in the oil chamber, the idle rotor can reduce the power loss caused by the resistance and reduce the fuel consumption. This technology can bring about half a percentage point reduction in fuel consumption according to experience, but the specific data also depends on the actual running conditions.
According to Scania, when the vehicle requires auxiliary braking, the driver does not need additional operations. Similar to the synchronizer structure in the Scania gearbox, the rotor can stop spinning and work smoothly with the stator. In addition, the disengageable technology hydraulic retarder does not consume fuel when braking, and the maximum braking torque also increases from the original 3500Nm to 4100Nm. The high gear ratio design increases the braking effect of the hydraulic retarder at a lower engine speed.
The new hydraulic retarder will be put into use in the first quarter of next year.
