CW heavy ion linear accelerator and separation fan cyclotron successfully combined

[ Instrument Network Instrument R & D ] On December 17, the first continuous wave high-charge state high-current heavy ion linear accelerator (SSC-Linac) and separation fan cyclotron (SSC) jointly designed and developed by the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. For the first time, a 40Ar7 + ion beam of 5.98 MeV / u was successfully extracted. This marks a new era for the large scientific device Lanzhou Heavy Ion Accelerator (HIRFL) to be supplied by multiple injectors.
In order to improve the HIRFL beam supply capability and further meet the needs of various types of scientific experiments at home and abroad for the heavy ion beam current, the accelerator team of the Institute of Modern Physics has developed a continuous wave linear injector SSC-Linac for SSC to increase the energy of the heavy nuclear beam , Strength and quality, of which the four-rod RFQ accelerator was completed in cooperation with the Institute of Heavy Ion Physics of Peking University. Researchers conducted preliminary joint debugging of SSC-Linac and SSC at a lower flow intensity. Under the condition of SAr inlet 40Ar7 + ion beam current 9 euA, they successfully got a 300 enA 5.98 MeV / u exit beam. When debugging, the linear cavity is loaded with 75% of the design power, and the emissivity of the outgoing beam reaches the design target. SSC uses the 8th harmonic acceleration mode for the first time, and successfully achieves beam injection, acceleration and extraction when the main magnetic field is 20% lower than the minimum main magnetic field in daily operation.
The successful implementation of the joint commissioning of the new injector SSC-Linac and SSC has laid the foundation for the next step in the commissioning and supply of various high-charge, high-energy heavy nuclear beams such as bismuth and uranium, and to improve the supply of HIRFL The ability to expand the operation mode of multiple machine combinations is of great significance, and will provide a more high-quality experimental platform for the development of various scientific experiments and the output of major results.
