The industry-famous Datang Energy Chemical Co., Ltd. reported that the SNG catalyst from the coal-to-synthetic natural gas (SNG) project in Inner Mongolia's Keshiketengqi Group was successfully developed by the Datang Energy Research Institute. The company's laboratory-scale catalyst development technology passed the customs smoothly, and the R&D work entered the pilot scale production stage. China's SNG methanation catalyst preparation technology has made new progress.
The experimental results show that the performance of the catalyst has reached the same level as the foreign catalysts of the same type, and has the characteristics of high activity, high resistance to carbon segregation, long life, and good heat resistance. In addition, methanation catalyst pilot demonstration equipment simulators, sideline test equipment, etc. have also been manufactured.
Datang International's SNG project in the Inner Mongolia Keshiketengqi is the first coal-based natural gas project approved in China. The project was formally started on August 30, 2009. The scale of the project is to produce 4 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. The first phase of the project is scheduled to run on June 30 this year.
According to Li Guojun, director of the office of Inner Mongolia’s Keshiketengqi Industrial Park, since the second half of 2011, Datang Energy Research Institute has launched a pilot project for the development of a self-contained SNG complete methanation catalyst and a 1000-hour life assessment experiment. The goal is to realize the localization of the key methanation catalyst technology in the Datang SNG process equipment technology. Through the unremitting efforts of the technical R&D team, the ideal catalyst development process was obtained at the end of 2011. In late April of this year, the 1000-hour life evaluation experiment of SNG catalyst was successfully completed and successful.
Professor Wang Yaxiong, Dean of the School of Chemical Engineering at Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology, said in an interview with reporters that the so-called methanation refers to the process of chemical reactions to produce methane under certain temperatures, pressures, and catalysts in the syngas CO, CO2, and H2. As the core technology of coal-based natural gas, methanation catalyst preparation technology is in the hands of several large foreign companies such as BASF, David, Topsoe, and Lurgi.
Some research institutes in China have carried out research and development work on increasing the calorific value of gas methanation from the 1980s to the 1990s. At present, apart from Datang International Group, the Dalian Institute of Chemicals, the Northwest Institute of Chemical Industry, the Southwest Research Institute of Chemical Industry, and the Shenhua Group are all developing methanation catalysts, but none have yet achieved industrial application. In recent years, with the large-scale construction of domestic coal-based natural gas projects in China, the development of domestic methanation catalysts has shown a tendency to overtake foreign countries.
